Ribamontán al Mar
Protected territory
In the municipality of Ribamontán al Mar and Marina de Cudeyo, specifically in the bay of Santander, there is a wonderful natural space made up of the mouth of the Miera River, the dunes of Puntal and the islands of Santa Marina and Mouro.
An environment declared a Site of Community Interest that, since 2004, has been part of the Natura 2000 Network.
Although there are several elements that make up this rich ecosystem of almost seven square kilometers, the undisputed protagonist is the set of dunes more than four kilometers long that connects Loredo with Punta Rabiosa, a protected space that evolves daily due to the changing sedimentation coming from of marine dynamism.
To preserve this dune range, it is extremely important to avoid stepping on it on the way to the beaches. Precisely to facilitate its conservation and recover its biodiversity, the authorities in charge of its protection have implemented several elements and programs to ensure its natural state and its non-degradation. Among the different actions, the dune plant nursery, created in 1990 by the General Directorate of Coasts, stands out in particular. A project that already produces 1,000,000 plants per year and whose production has served, in its entirety, to restore the systems.
Among the multitude of species, in the dunes of Puntal and the Miera estuary there are examples of black-green lizards, Atlantic salmon, various species of bats such as horseshoe, buzzard or cave bats and insects such as the damselfly or stag beetle, as well as a wide range of birds.
A setting as diverse as it is fascinating that offers a perfect plan for a wonderful rural getaway, whether in a relaxed tone or with a more active touch such as that provided by practicing one of the trendy water sports in the area, paddle surfing.
